Singapore visitor numbers rise

Singapore saw an annual increase in its number of overseas visitors in September.

Some 766,000 people visited Singapore in September, 7.1 per cent more than in the previous year.

This is a new record for the month of September, according to the figures from the Singapore tourism board.

The number of visitor days spent in the south-east Asian country last month stood at three million, an increase of over 17 per cent on 2006.

Over half of the visitors to Singapore in September were from the country's top five markets - Indonesia, China, Australia, India and Japan.

Some S$152.2 million (£51 million) was generated in room revenue for Singapore's hotels in September, a year-on-year increase of 7.4 per cent and a new record for the month.

Singapore comprises a number of different islands and, along with Monaco and Vatican City, is one of the few remaining city states in the world, meaning that it is a region controlled exclusively by one city.
