The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has asked everyone who plans to attend its International Conference on Climate Change and Tourism to set a good example and offset the carbon for their journeys.

UNWTO's conference is set to take place in Davos in Switzerland between October 1st and 3rd.

The organisation said that its aim was to "make all travel, accommodation and activity related to the conference carbon neutral". Organisers said that they hoped this move would show the world that they were serious about promoting environmentally-sound tourism.

"We want to send a signal to our own industry that carbon offsetting is easy and that it will make a real difference over time," explained UNWTO assistant secretary general Geoffrey Lipman.

"Responding to the climate challenge will require substantial structural changes and take many years to implement, but there are some things we can do immediately."

Recently, Mr Lipman said that it was imperative that tourism looked to become as environmentally sound as was possible.

He added: "Tourism can and must play its part in responding to the global climate imperative and we can and must do this in a way that also advances the industry's contribution to poverty alleviation."
