Windsurfing enthusiasts from all over the world will be heading to the Hawaiian island of Maui for the Aloha Classic championships in November.

Ho'okipa Beach Park near Paia on the island has hosted the event every year since 1984, during which time it has become one of the sport's most popular meetings.

The competition is one of the oldest and most-loved in the sport, owing to the large surf and consistent trade winds that characterise the Hawaiian islands.

Its popularity is also due to the fact that, since its inception, the Aloha Classic has been the final meeting on the windsurfing pro world tour.

Over 100 competitors and athletes from around the globe travel to the event and the list of past competitors includes many of the sport's well-known names, including Robbie Naish, Pete Cabrina, Dana Dawes and Jennifer Henderson.

Maui is the second largest of the Hawaiian islands, after Hawaii itself, and is a popular spot with tourists.
