At the glittering ceremony this year's Gold Award winners included a sixteenth century restaurant with rooms in Devon, an environmentally sustainable villa in Norfolk and Europe's largest free airshow in Sunderland.

Hugh Taylor, VisitEngland chairman said: “The Enjoy England Awards for Excellence highlight the rising quality and diversity of holiday experiences on offer in England. From foodie gems and unique attractions to magnificent hotels and sustainable B&B’s, England is an exciting world-class tourism destination, in which to discover something new. We are proud to honour the people behind those outstanding tourism businesses who play a vital role in encouraging visitors to holiday in England.”

In total there were 15 different categories of awards. The sixteenth century Salty Monk in Sidmouth became the Bed and Breakfast of the Year. Strattons Hotel and Restaurant in Norfolk and The Cottage Lodge in the New Forest both received a Gold Award in the new Sustainable Tourism Award of the Year category. The Small Hotel of the Year winner was The Devonshire Arms in the Yorkshire Dales.

Jamie Oliver's Fifteen Cornwall was named the winner of this year's Taste of England Award. The Sunderland International Airshow won the new Best Tourism Experience Award and Michael Eavis CBE, organiser of the Glastonbury Festival, was awarded the Outstanding Contribution to Tourism.

The annual awards are organised by VisitBritain and sponsored by The Caravan Club. This year the event was held outside of London for the first time, in St George's Hall to celebrate Liverpool, European City of Culture and St George's Day. Promoting the Capital of Culture, Liverpool 08 Place won the Gold Award for Tourism Information Centre of the Year.

The Tourism Oscars aim to promote high standards and healthy competition in the English tourist industry to retain England's position as a world-class destination.
