Italy set to welcome Puccini visitors

Italy is set to receive an even higher number of foreign visitors in 2008, the year that marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Giacomo Puccini.

The year 2008 will mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of composer Giacomo Puccini and Italy is expecting an influx of visitors to celebrate the occasion.

A number of events will be held throughout the country, including the Nuovo Gran Teatro at Torre del Lago.

This 3,200-seat arena overlooking Lake Massaciuccoli will open a festival on July 11th with a new production of Turandot.

Visitors will be able to see new versions of Puccini's Tosca starting on July 12th and the world famous Madame Butterfly from July 20th, as well as renditions of Edgar starting on August 9th.

Torre del Lago belongs to the town of Viareggio and is about 80km from Florence and only 30 minutes from Pisa international airport.

It is located in Tuscany, in northern Italy, which is home to six Unesco world heritage sites, including the historical centre of Florence and the rural region of Val d'Orcia.
