Keepers at Port Lympne Wild Animal Park in Kent are celebrating as one of the Malayan tapir's gave birth to a beautiful baby boy.
After 13 months of waiting, 10 year old Lidaeng gave birth to her baby under the watchful eyes of the keepers. The newly born male has yet to be named and has already grown to the size of a puppy with his distinctive spotted and stripped coat. The young male currently spends most of his time snuggled up to his mother on their straw bed.
The new baby is one of six Malayan tapirs that are at home at Port Lympne, as Head of Hoofstock Bob Savill explained: "We have been waiting patiently for Lidaeng to give birth and everyone is delighted by the safe arrival of the baby. Fewer than 200 Malayan tapirs live in captivity with breeding in captivity a difficult task so it is very satisfying that we have the arrival of yet another healthy calf. Our record is excellent having had eight baby tapirs born in the past twenty four years in the park."
As the weeks go by the new tapir will begin exploring his surroundings on his own and will start experimenting with munching twigs and peat which will encourage his digestive system to take effect. You can see the distinctive young chap by booking your tickets to Port Lympne, complete with an overnight stay in a nearby hotel, with Holiday Extras today.
