February 2008
The keepers at Whipsnade Wild Animal Park are celebrating the arrival of a new baby elephant born on January 17th.
Mother Azizah gave birth to the baby male after a short labour following a 630 day gestation period. Keepers had been expecting the birth and were keeping day and night watches on the mother and were on hand, keeping a close eye on proceedings during the birth.
Within just 20 minutes the calf was on his feet and taking his first shaky steps and is now ready to explore the big outdoors with his mother. He is the second calf born to 24 year-old Azizah and his father is Emmett, the herd's only male.
Whipsnade Wild Animal Park's herd of nine Asian elephants share a seven acre paddock. The paddock is made up of five linked outside areas with a large grass paddock, two separate houses, two pools, mud wallows, dust baths and rubbing posts. Providing plenty of comfort and stimulation to the herd.
Home to hundreds of animals, Whipsnade Wild Animal Park makes a great destination for a family day out. Book your tickets complete with an overnight stay in a nearby hotel with Holiday Extras today.
