Heathrow Airport is battling more than snow this month as hundreds of untagged bags are still piled high, over a month since the luggage backlog began.
After 2 baggage equipment failures and fog grounded flights in December, nearly 10,000 items of baggage piled up awaiting delivery to their owners. With several hundred bags without tags remaining at the airport, British Airways are making every effort to trace the owners though some of the bags belong to passengers from other airlines. The airline are attempting to trace the owners by contacting those passengers that have placed claims for missing baggage.
Lost, delayed and damaged luggage is covered under the Montreal Convention, to make a claim, customers must fill in the missing luggage form available on the British Airways website or request a form by phone - details provided below. A tracing period of 45 days is applied to all lost and untagged bags then, as a last resort, the bags are opened to see if the contents offer any clues as to ownership. The tracing period is extended in times of disruption. After an allotted period unclaimed bags are sent for auction.
If you are still to be reunited with your missing baggage ensure that you fill in a missing baggage claim form. For further updates and other up to the minute travel news, remember to check back with Holiday Extras.
