Following an alleged terror scare on a Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Detroit, additional security measures have been put in place by the Transportation Security Administration for those travelling both domestically and internationally to US destinations.
Below are details of the changes.
The Transportation Security Administration has issued a directive for additional security measures to be implemented for the last point of departure international flights to the US. Passengers can expect to see additional security measures at international airports such as increased gate screening including pat-downs and bag searches.
During flights themselves, passengers may be asked to follow flight crew instructions, such as stowing personal items, turning off electronic equipment and remaining seated for certain portions of the flight.
For example, during the final hour of the flight, passengers may be asked to remain in their seats and not to cover themselves with a blanket nor keep any personal belongings on their lap.
Passengers travelling within the US should give themselves more time to check in and proceed through the security checkpoint before their flight, especially during the busy holiday travel season. Those travelling on international flights to US destinations should allow extra time for security and arrive an additional hour earlier.
In order to minimise the delays caused by new security measures, travellers to the US are now only permitted to carry one item of hand luggage.
Airline security is under continuous review, so these new measures will be analysed to ensure the highest possible levels of security.
