BA strike set for February

December 29, 2009

Reports in the Guardian have revealed that potential strike action by British Airways cabin crew may go ahead at the end of February.

The news comes within weeks of a planned 12-day Christmas strike being found invalid in the high court after those balloted included members that had already applied for voluntary redundancy. However, trade union Unite, which represents more than 12,000 cabin crew at the airline, is looking to hold another ballot among members in the new year.

Bassa, the branch of Unite responsible for the BA cabin crew, warned that industrial action is likely should the airline fail to provide a resolution to disputes over job cuts and staffing levels.

In a letter to members, the union stated: "Unite has already notified British Airways of our intention to re-ballot at the beginning of January; the process will be arranged during the Christmas break and database checking will take place, throughout the night if required. If [BA chief executive Willie Walsh] does not take this opportunity, courtesy of the courts, to negotiate and bring about peace, it will again be wasted like so many opportunities before, and our airline will be in the headlines for all the wrong reasons all over again."

Any potential strike is set to be less than the original 12-day action previously proposed. Mrs Justice Cox referred to the length of the planned walkout in her high court ruling, thus tempering the extent of any future action.
