Airbus A380 Emirates order

Airbus has scored a major coup over its rival Boeing by securing what is described as "the largest remaining jet order of the year", worth around $31 billion.

According to Bloomberg News, Emirates Airlines has ordered 50 Airbus A350-900s and 20 A350-1000s, with an option on another 50 A350-900s, at the Dubai Airshow.

Emirates has reportedly chosen the Airbus A350 instead of Boeing's new 787 Dreamliner, and has also rejected Boeing's new 747 in favour of the new Airbus A380 superjumbo. The Dubai based airline now has firm orders for 58 of the double-decker A380s.

President of Emirates, Tim Clark, told Bloomberg that it opted for the A350 rather than the 787 because Boeing was unable to offer a larger version, the 787-10. "The 787-9 wasn't suitable for us and the 787-10 wasn't available to us," said Clark.

The Emirates order is also good news for Rolls-Royce, which offers the only engine currently available on the A350. The order could be worth as much as $8.4 billion to Rolls-Royce.
