Stansted Airport has invested heavily in improving its fire-fighting capabilities with £1 million going towards a new fire station and three state-of-the-art vehicles.

At a special ceremony held at the airport, BAA chief executive Colin Matthews cut the ribbon to herald the opening of the new station. The extension features additional parking bays to house the new Scania domestic appliance, an incident command vehicle and a medical support trailer.

Stewart Wingate, Stansted Airport's managing director, was also present at the unveiling: "The Stansted Airport Fire Department offers a world-class service in maintaining health and safety at our airport, protecting the millions of passengers that pass through every year and the thousands of staff who work on site.

"To continue our excellent response times, we've invested more than £1 million in new facilities and equipment. This cutting-edge technology will be a welcome addition to the fire and rescue fleet and will ensure the service is equipped to deal with any incident at the airport for decades to come."

Stansted Airport's fire manager, John Farrow, added: "The new vehicles join the existing nine fire appliances as part of a significant package of improvements to equipment and facilities at the airport's fire station. This investment, especially in this difficult economic climate, clearly demonstrates that safety remains the airport's number one priority."
