Team from Southampton Airport complete Three Peaks Challenge

A team of firefighters from Southampton Airport has successfully completed the challenging Three Peaks Challenge as part of a fundraising event on behalf of charities local to the airport.

The eight competitors were each awarded a platinum medal after completing the ascent of Ben Nevis, Scafel Pike and Snowdon in 17 hours and 10 minutes. The time set by the Southampton Airport team surpassed by 14 minutes the time set by a team from Gatwick Airport in 2005.

Through sponsorship and collections, they managed to raise approximately £1,000 on behalf of The Burns Unit at Salisbury Hospital and The Fire Fighter's Charity.

Stuart Carpenter, airport firefighter and team captain, said: "Our goal was to achieve a time of 20 hours or below to get the gold medal, which had eluded us in previous years. However, with some serious training in the months leading up to the event we actually managed to get a platinum medal, and came 11th out of 112 teams. I would like to thank Avis for their support with the donation of two cars for us to use during the challenge."
