Holidays in Turkey more popular

Turkey is becoming a more popular holiday destination for Brits as more low-cost airlines fly to the country.

The number of UK visitors to Turkey has increased by 14% this year according to the Turkish Culture and Tourism Office (TCTO). From January to October this year, 1.84 million holidaymakers from the UK travelled to Turkey.

"These figures demonstrate that Turkey is a year-round destination offering something for everyone, from adventurous family holidays to bespoke cultural tours," says TCTO UK director Sermin Ozduran.

Istanbul at Night Holidays

One of the reasons for the growing number of UK visitors to Turkey is that more low-cost airlines are flying to the country. Among the airlines flying to Turkey are Avro and XL Airways. Other airlines flying from the UK to Turkey include British Airways, Lufthansa, and Turkish Airlines. Flights leave from various UK airports including Gatwick, Birmingham and Manchester.

Istanbul in Turkey will become the European Capital of Culture in 2010, and by 2020 Turkey is predicted to be one of the top three tourist destinations in the Mediterranean. Popular resorts include Antalya, Bodrum, Fethiye and Izmir.

Istanbul hosts a Formula 1 Grand Prix, and other popular events in Turkey include the Edirne Oil Wrestling Championships and the Whirling Dervish Festival in Konya.
