After much anticipation, Hairspray opened on 30th October 2007 to positive notices from the popular press and has proved so popular with theatre goers that a new booking period taking the West End show to 4 April 2009 has been announced.
60's themed fun, Hairspray follows Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart. Tracy's lifetime dream is to dance and when she lands a spot on a local TV dance show Tracy goes from outsider to teen celebrity over night. Her next mission becomes toppling the show's current dancing princess and win the heart of heartthrob Link Larkin.
Mel Smith, best known for his television work, plays Wilbur Turnblad opposite Michael Ball in drag as Edna Turnblad with complete unkowns Leanne Jones and Ben James-Ellis as Tracy Turnblad and Link Larkin respectively. This West End musical features a huge cast that also includes Tracie Bennett as Velma Von Tussle, Natalie Best as Inez, Dermot Canavan as Male Authority Figure, Elinor Collett as Penny Pingleton, Johnie Fiori as Motormouth Maybelle, Adrian Hansel as Seawood, Paul Manuel as Corny Collins, Wendy Somerville as Female Authority Figure and Rachel Wooding as Amber Von Tussle.
