Hairspray is due to open on London's West End on October 30th. The Show's producers have now officially confirmed that the role of Wilbur Turnblad will be played by Mel Smith.
Mel Smith is best known to audiences for his television work which includes Smith & Jones, Alias Smith & Jones and Not The 9 O'Clock News. Smith also has a substantial film history which includes Twelfth Night, Wilt, Morons From Outer Space, National Lampoon's European Vacation and the comedy classic Princess Bride.
Mel Smith will be playing opposite Michael Ball (in drag) as Edna Turnblad alongside a 22 year-old complete unknown, Leanne Jones, who is making her first professional appearance in Hairspray as Tracy Turnblad. Further cast details are yet to be confirmed.
The Tony Award-winning musical will playing in the Shaftesbury Theatre - which is currently hosting the West End production of Fame. With 60's themed fun, Hairspray follows Tracy Turnbald, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart. Tracy's lifetime dream is to dance, and when she lands a spot on a local TV dance show Tracy goes from outsider to teen celebrity over night. Her next mission in life is to topple the show's current dancing princess and win the heart of heartthrob Link Larkin.
Hairspray is based on the 1988 John Waters film of the same name. You can now book tickets for this musical as part of a Holiday Extras Theatre Break.
