Lord of the Rings in television documentary

The Middle Earth epic musical The Lord of the Rings is to feature in a new documentary showing the battles of cast and crew as they prepare for opening night.

The documentary has been filmed by award-winning documentary maker Agnieszka Piotrowska and will be shown on the National Geographic Channel and US television network PBS. The programme follows the team behind The Lord of the Rings and performers including Laura Michelle Kelly and Michael Therriault (Galadriel and Gollum) as they progress through rehearsals to the first previews.

Agnieszka Piotroska feels that the documentary will give an uncensored insight into the creative process and said "It's a proper look at how it all happens. It's unusual because they were good at giving me that access. It's interesting to see just how hard it is to put on this show."

The Lord of the Rings opened on London's West End on May 9th. Bringing J.R.R Tolkien's epic trilogy to the stage was never going to be a simple task. The Theatre Royal Drury Lane was closed for four months before the opening as the £1 million stage complete with 17 pneumatic lifts and 3 stage turntables. This £25 million production features more than 70 actors, singers and musicians and an array of props that includes more than 500 pieces of armour while the actors playing the Ents - talking trees - have to wear 10ft stilts. The sheer scale and detail involved in bringing the novel to the stage will no doubt make a thoroughly fascinating documentary.

The documentary - Lord of the Rings on Stage - will hit screens on Sunday July 29th at 5pm on the National Geographic Channel.
