Desperately Seeking Susan

Previews for the NEW London musical Desperately Seeking Susan began early in October at the Novello Theatre, London. This stage adaptation of the 1980's film of the same name is proving to be a popular choice with theatregoers.

A dedicated cast, innovative choreography from Andy Blankenbuehler and stunning performances from the leads have set this London show on a path to success. Director Angus Jackson, musical director Matt Brind and set designer Tim Hatley have transformed a popular story into a West End phenomenon, with moments in the production where the lines of cinematography and theatrical performance blur so well that you find yourself unsure whether you are in the cinema or indeed the Novello.

If you are a fan of Mamma Mia! or We Will Rock You, you won't be disappointed by Desperately Seeking Susan which is certainly of the same calibre, although not quite clever enough to knock either show from the top spots.

Emma Williams (Susan) gives an outstanding performance, characterising the feisty, alluring qualities of the role with ease and integrity. Kelly Price (Roberta Glass) expertly portrays the timid, likeable character of housewife Roberta and although not as strong vocally as her co-star she is by no means a superb actress. Steven Serlin (Larry Stein) gives the most memorable performance of the show, with impeccable comedy timing and a truly hilarious representation of the role, Serlin had the audience in fits of laughter at every appearance.

The entire cast is wholly dedicated to their performance with each of the lead roles expertly portrayed from eccentric shop owner Tina played by Paul Hazel, to the extremely likeable and endearing Dez - Roberta's unexpected romantic partner played by Alec Newman. The Villain Alex Verne is superbly acted by Steven Houghton and the Rock n' Roll performance from Mark McGee (Jay Shea) is worth the price of the ticket alone! Supporting roles from Jonathan Wrather (Gary Glass), Leanne Best (Leslie Glass), Alex Gaumond (Vito/Ray Sunshine) and Victoria Hamilton-Barritt (Maria) are also worth mentioning, with each one bringing their very own flavour to the mix.
