Big Ben 'London's top movie location'

Big Ben has been voted London's most iconic film location in a new survey.

Big Ben is London's top movie location thanks to a scene from The 39 Steps in which a character hangs from the clock face.

In a survey by cinema advertising company Pearl & Dean, St Paul's Cathedral was found to be the second most popular London landmark to have featured in a film.

The distinctive structure won votes thanks to the scene in Mary Poppins where it is the setting for the song Feed the Birds.

Some more recent cinematic appearances of London landmarks appeared in the survey results, with Westminster Bridge in third place for its part in 2002 horror movie 28 Days Later and Portobello Market, which featured in Notting Hill, in eighth place.

The use of Piccadilly Circus for the finale of An American Werewolf in London saw it voted fourth in the list, while Westminster Abbey won seventh spot following its appearance in The Da Vinci Code.

Commenting on the results, Pearl and Dean spokeswoman Kathryn Jacob told the BBC: "For a truly iconic image of London in film it's hard to beat the nail-biting, clock-ticking drama seen at the top of Big Ben in The 39 Steps."
