Poor weather drives Brits abroad

As inclement weather continues to affect the UK, more and more people are jetting off on last minute holidays, a new report suggests.

Leading holiday website lastminute.com said that it has experienced a surge in booking to sunny countries as people escape the gloomy UK.

The website's managing director, John Bevan, commented: "Brits are desperate to escape.

"We have witnessed an increase in traffic of 12 per cent week on week and an increase in holiday bookings of up to 15 per cent over the last few days."

In particular, the site reported that it had experience a surge in the number of people booking holidays to Greece.

As a result of this demand, the country has overtaken Egypt to become the most popular destination for a last minute break.

Other popular short, sunny break locations that have proved popular include Spain and Turkey.

Towards the end of June, a heat wave hit the southern countries in Europe and temperatures in Greece rose to above 100 degrees.
