easyJet's environmental credentials outlined

Low-cost carrier easyJet has introduced a new scheme which allows passengers to exclusively offset the carbon emissions produced by their flight with United Nations-certified projects.

The airline said the move was part of its ongoing effort to make its carbon offsetting scheme the most transparent, trustworthy and efficient offered by a European airline.

Initially, all the money which easyJet receives from passengers looking to offset their travel emissions will be invested in carbon credits from the Perlabi Hydroelectric Project in Ecuador.

This project recently underwent extensive environmental auditing and was certified by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) as a result.

"For people who care about the environment and want to fly greener, easyJet is the right choice," claimed Andy Harrison, the airline's chief executive.

"Carbon offsetting can never be a substitute for environmental efficiency, but for easyJet - as one of the most efficient airlines in the world - it is a big step towards minimising our environmental impact further.

"While other airlines are hiding their offsetting schemes on obscure parts of their website, easyJet has made it part of the booking process, so that every passenger can make a conscious decision."

Environment secretary Hilary Benn called easyJet's scheme "a really positive step forward".
