Lufthansa considers economy beds

German flag carrier Lufthansa is considering installing triple-decker bunk beds on its planes.

While most airlines provide seats which can be fully relined for their business and first-class passengers, Lufthansa is considering offering sleeping options for economy passengers.

Under the proposed plans, beds would be set out in a herringbone formation and could be installed on Lufthansa's fleet of Airbus A380 superjumbos - which the airline expects to take delivery of in 2008.

The beds could cost just £120 more than standard economy flights. The standard in-flight entertainment services would still be available for these passengers.

While the plans are in their early stages, the airline said that customer feedback on the proposals had been very encouraging.

Lufthansa spokeswoman Amelie Lorenz commented: "We are going to analyse the results of the survey and then we will decide whether to proceed or not. But the first results have been very positive."

When Lufthansa takes delivery of its new A380s in 2008 they will be used on various long-haul routes from Germany to the US, Australia, South Africa and the Far East.

Lufthansa flies to several airports in the UK, including Birmingham, London City and Heathrow.
