Ryanair Proposes Insurance Shake-up

Low-cost carrier Ryanair has said that holidaymakers who opt for more reliable airlines should be rewarded with lower travel insurance premiums.

The airline outlined its argument in a letter to the Association of British Insurers (ABI).

Ryanair said that risk-assessed consumer travel insurance policies should be introduced to make insurance cheaper for passengers using airlines which are less likely to lose baggage or be delayed.

According to Ryanair, it is unfair that passengers who use reliable airlines are financially penalised for the losses which occur on other carriers.

Ryanair's Peter Sherrard explained: "For years, the car insurance industry has provided discounts for low-risk categories such as women drivers and the over 30s.

"The time has now come for passengers flying with airlines that deliver the best customer service to enjoy the same discounts.

"Ryanair calls on the insurance industry to take a new look at travel insurance. The statistics prove that airlines are far from equal, yet insurers do not differentiate."

The carrier also published figures to support its argument. These showed that Ryanair lost fewer passenger bags between April and June than airlines like Air France, Lufthansa and British Airways.

Ryanair recently publicly criticised Aer Lingus' decision to cancel its services between Shannon and the UK.
