World to celebrate tourism this month

September 27th is the date for World Tourism Day this year, when countries all over the globe have the opportunity to celebrate the importance of the travel industry.

Arranged by the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), the event also enables destinations around the world to showcase their regions and what they have to offer to visitors.

The United States will be one of the countries taking part in the celebration on September 27th to emphasise the importance of tourism in the country.

Last year North America received almost 51 million international visitors, who spent around $108 billion (£53.7 billion).

In 2007 the country is on target to achieve new records for both arrivals and spending.

According to figures from the UNWTO the world tourism industry was just as successful in 2006, with 842 million arrivals around the world and travel-related spending reaching $735 billion.
