Internet 'used by 50% of young travellers'

The internet is becoming an increasingly important tool for young travellers, with half now using it to make their holiday bookings, according to research.

A study by the World Youth & Student Education Travel Confederation found that only one in ten young holidaymakers made their bookings online five years ago.

Travellers also appear to be spending more on their excursions, with average expenditure per trip rising 40 per cent since 2002 to €1,915 (£1,334).

Some €1,140 of this is reserved for use once in the destination, Travelmole reports.

The traditionally popular holiday destinations of Australia, the US and France seem to have retained their appeal and are among the top spots for the younger generation.

Australia is also popular with backpackers, along with neighbouring New Zealand and Asian hotspot Thailand.

The main motivating factors for young travellers, according to the research, are the excitement of exploration and opportunities to learn a language, do volunteer work and study abroad.
