British travellers are flocking to the world's top shopping destinations before Christmas, according to lastminute.com.

As retail prices continued to climb in the UK, Brits are heading to shopping destinations all over the world in search of unique gifts at bargain prices, according to lastminute.com.

Figures from the travel and leisure retailer show that British people are booking more long-haul short breaks this Christmas than ever before.

Shopping destinations such as New York, Hong Kong and Boston are proving particularly popular.

The Big Apple has seen a 50 per cent year-on-year increase in bookings, according to lastminute.com, as shoppers look to take advantage of the strength of the pound against the dollar.

An iPod, for instance, can be bought for $149 (£72) in the US compared to £99 in the UK, while a pair of '7 for all Mankind' jeans can be more than twice as expensive in Britain as in North America.

Hong Kong appears to be the destination of choice for gadget shoppers, while Milan, Singapore, Bangkok and Marrakech have also been proving popular with travellers looking for an overseas shopping spree.
