More time, money 'help over-50s travel'
Many people over the age of 50 are now able to realise their travelling ambitions as they have more time on their hands and the money to spend on holidays, it has been claimed.
The free time enjoyed by many people over the age of 50 and the extra disposable income that often results from having grown-up children is helping this market realise its travel ambitions, according to a spokesperson for Alliance & Leicester.
Steve Gracey's comments follow a survey by the company which found that 11 million people over the age of 50 plan to travel more in the next five to ten years.
Over half of these said they would be interested in heading to a long-haul destination and 26 per cent said their first choice would be Australia or New Zealand.
"The over-50s tend to have a bit more time, because they are either retiring from their job or their children are flying the nest, or they have more money to use to actually go further afield," Mr Gracey said.
The travel sector is responding to this trend, according to the Alliance & Leicester spokesperson, with more facilities being provided to suit the needs and requirements of older travellers.
"In a number of sectors you find that the over-50s are a more and more recognised age group, because they are much more savvy than their younger counterparts," Mr Gracey explained.
