Virgin 'the airline for sports enthusiasts'

Virgin Atlantic has claimed that it has 'come to the aid' of sports travellers by allowing passengers to carry one piece of sporting equipment on flights.

Long-haul carrier Virgin Atlantic has boasted that it is "the airline for sports enthusiasts" with the announcement that passengers can take one piece of sporting equipment on flights in addition to their checked baggage allowance.

The development follows British Airways' decision to ban objects such as surfboards and javelins from its cargo hold from November 6th.

Virgin Atlantic passengers will be able to check diving equipment, golf accessories, fishing paraphernalia and other sporting items, as long as they conform to size and weight allowances, free of charge.

Articles must weigh no more than 32kg and combined dimensions of height, width and depth must not exceed 158cm.

Paul Dickinson, the airline's sales and marketing director, said: "Virgin Atlantic continues to be the airline for sports enthusiasts unlike others who are doing everything they can to prevent the gold medallists of the future transporting their equipment.

"Our new sports equipment policy enables all sports travellers, whether Olympic teams or not, to enjoy their journey throughout."
