Nigel Planer attended university in Sussex but did not enjoy his university experience. After his university studies, Nigel attended drama school where he acted in a number of plays directed by fellow student, Stephen Poliakoff. While at drama school, Nigel Planer was reunited with his old friend, Pete Richens. The pair began to write a comedy duo and performed regularly at the famous comedy store in Soho. Nigel and Pete worked on their comedy double act, 'The Outer Limits' for a year and developed the act to include a variety of characters and an aspect of musical comedy.
While performing at The Comedy Store, London, Nigel was talent spotted by a BBC producer. Planer was chosen to appear in the BBC comedy show 'Boom Boom...Out Go The Lights.' This television show was regarded by many as the first TV showcase for a new generation of alternative comedians. Nigel Planer's debut television appearance led him directly to a role in the popular, alternative comedy series, 'The Young Ones' where he starred alongside Rik Mayall. Nigel Planer also acted in the 1980s comedy series 'Shine On Harvey Moon' which was a successful, mainstream comedy.
During the 1980s, Nigel Planer appeared in a number of televised comedy shows. In 1990 Planer played the part of 'Nicholas Craig' for the BBC television series 'Nicholas Craig...The Naked Actor.' This television production was a theatrical satire comedy about a fictional actor. Planer followed this show with another theatrical satire, 'Simon Gray's Unnatural Pursuits.' Nigel Planer was involved in children's show, The Magic Roundabout, where he gave his voice to the characters and wrote English scripts for the classic animation.
Recently, Nigel Planer has pursued his love of the theatre by taking on a number of roles in musicals. Planer has appeared in Ben Elton's We Will Rock You and Puccini's 'La Boheme.' In 2005, Planer staged his first play, 'On The Ceiling' in London. Planer's latest role as the Wizard in Wicked adds yet another role to the diverse portfolio of this multi-talented actor.
