Blood Brothers - The Story
Set in 1960's Liverpool, the musical Blood Brothers tells the story of twin brothers separated at birth. The twin's mother is too poor to care for both of them and so gives one of the twins away reluctantly to her wealthy boss. The two boys go on to lead very different lives. Later in life their paths cross with tragic consequences.
Willy Russell is best known for his plays Educating Rita and Shirley Valentine. Originally Blood Brothers was written as a drama without music for the Young People's Theatre in Liverpool. The play was reborn as a musical - premiering at the Liverpool Playhouse.
The earlier London showing of Blood Brothers starred Kiki Dee as Mrs Johnston. After extensive touring in the UK provinces the musical Blood Brothers returned to London's Albery Theatre in 1988. The show moved to the Phoenix Theatre and is still enthralling audiences and attracting standing ovations.
