Coming Soon: Carousel - Previews from 22nd November 2008
The Building Design of the Strand Theatre
The theatre was designed by CJ Phipps in 1881 and updated in 1929, with an overhaul of the auditorium and interior. The original theatre was then sadly destroyed in 1990 when a fire raged through the building, devastating the beautiful art deco interior.
By 1993 the theatre was restored to its former glory and its art deco style as created by Frank Tugwell and Basil Iondies. The Savoy theatre is just as beautiful as the original with the walls left as the only remaining part of the first building
The History of the Savoy Theatre
There has been a theatre on the site of the Savoy since the 1880's. The original building was also named the Savoy theatre and was payed for by Richard D'Olyly Carte. Carte used the profits from showing Gilbert and Sullivan operettas to fund the theatre and the Savoy Hotel. Unfortunately the original building was gutted by a fire, when it was restored the theatre kept its name but changed its style from Victorian to Art Deco.
The Savoy theatre was the first public building in London to use electric lights, and the theatre is situated on the only road in the UK that you have to by law drive on the right hand side. This unusual trait was made legal to allow Savoy theatre goers to alight from their vehicles and walk straight into the theatre.
Facilities at The Savoy Theatre
The Savoy Theatre has an infra red or loop sound amplification system for the hard of hearing.
Wheelchair access and assistance is available on request and guide dogs are permitted within the auditorium.
