The score for the new musical version of Gone With The Wind is by first-time composer Margaret Martin. Hailing from Los Angeles, California, Dr Martin first sent the book along with an early CD rendering of some of the show's songs to Sir Trevor Nunn last year. Designed to reflect the emotional complexity of the novel and film, Martin's score captures both the emotional intensity and the formal pageantry of the original. As melodic and tender ballads are absorbed by raucous military anthems, the whole score is planned to reflect the turbulence of an estate in Georgia beset by the Civil War. Think dulcet, sweeping strings punctuated by rapping, rolling snare drums and your part of the way to capturing the conflict of that is contained within the book.
Directed by the eminent Sir Trevor Nunn, Martin's score is sure to be anchored by a solid subtextual weight. Martin's songs promise to soar with all the vibrancy and intensity of hit "jukebox" musicals yet retain its serious, emotional punch.
