History of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat has always been described by critics as one of the most colourful shows to hit the West End. It was originally penned as a short 15 minute 'pop cantata' for a school Easter project back in 1967. It was later revived and expanded during the mid 70's and finally made it's debut on Broadway in 1982. Since then, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat has succeeded to charm audiences the world over with its variety of exciting, energetic and often quite eclectic musical styles.
Original Story
The show was taken and adapted from the Biblical Story, Coat of Many Colours which documents the tale of Joseph and his coat. The garment was a gift from his father and subsequently caused a lot of tension between Joseph and his brothers. They plotted to kill him as they saw this gift as an indication that Joseph was going to assume leadership of the family. His eldest brother, Reuben intercepted this plot and Joseph was sold to slavery. The story grew from there.
Background
Joseph had a turbulent start to say the least. Written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, the rights to the show were sold early on for the small fee of 100 guineas (about $165) to independent music publishers Novello. This company was consequently sold to another outfit called Film Trax before falling back into Lloyd Webber's hands through the medium of the Really Useful Group (Andrew Lloyd Webber's production company.) Many deals were made and fell through, but eventually the show came into fruition when Jason Donovan took the lead role at the London Palladium on 12th June 1991. The £1.5m pound production opened with advance ticket sales topping £2m and broke the theatre's box office records for the duration of the show before It ended in 1994. These sales were helped by Donovan's rendition of 'Any Dream Will Do' being released into the British charts and reaching the top spot for two weeks. As the British show went from strength to strength, the American version featuring Donny Osmond began to take off as well. With both sides of the Atlantic conquered, there really was no stopping the show.
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat has been a huge success not only on the stage but also on the small screen. A video was released a few years back with Donny Osmond at the helm once more. This adaptation of the classic paid homage to the original cantata routine by showing the children sat in an assembly hall waiting eagerly for the show to start. The appearance of the Pharaoh as Elvis Presley was an obvious highlight, as the score for this particular number was indicated as being in '1957 Rock Time.'
