The Music of Oliver!

The unforgettable music and the lyrics to Oliver! were written by Lionel Bart in 1960. He had begun his career eight years earlier when he first started to write for The International Youth Centre. Penning numerous songs and revues for the IYC, it wasn't until Bart joined The Unity Theatre in London that his work really began to take off.

Oliver! was the third full length musical that Bart had written and, right from its opening performance at The New Theatre, the show was a hit. Audiences loved Bart's lavish production and elegant score and soon the production was toured around the globe. Embedded within the story, the riotous sing-a-longs like Food, Glorious Food and Be Back Soon effortlessly make way for sweeping and sensitive ballads like Where is Love? creating a rich and varied masterpiece.

Of course, it's the songs that really makes or breaks a show in the West End and, with a score that includes such stunning numbers as these, it's easy to see how Oliver! has been so successful for over 40 years; and why it will go on to be such a hit with audiences everywhere.
