Set in the Parisian underworld during the period of the French Restoration (1815-1830). Jean Valjean is released from prison after serving nineteen years for little more than stealing a loaf of bread. Valjean is determined to put his criminal past behind him, despite the yellow ticket of leave he must wear by law, marking him as a criminal. Then, when another man is arrested in his place, Jean Valjean must decide whether or not he should speak up and condemn his own freedom.
