7 Things to Do Before You Go to the Airport

Before you go the airport, check these off the list.

Never beaten on price

Passport. Tickets. Money. Luggage. You're all packed and ready to go, right? Well, almost. Before you need those airport tips, go through airport security, or take that long haul flight, make sure you don't forget these seven important things to do before you go to the airport.

Check Visa Requirements

visa requirements

Are you absolutely certain you have the correct visa (or meet visa-waiver requirements)? It can be a nasty shock to arrive at the airport and find you don't have the correct documents, so check the Visa Requirements for British Citizens to ensure your visa information is up to date. Check your passport too - many countries require you to have six months left before expiry, so make sure you comply before you go.

Get Immunised

Travel Immunisation

Some countries require travel vaccinations (particularly for Yellow Fever) as a condition of entry, so it's vital to know if the places you're travelling to are on this list. Check the CDC website for information if you're heading abroad, and remember that you must be vaccinated at least ten days before you travel. For recommended vaccinations and health advice, speak to your GP or a travel clinic well before you leave.

Check Your Insurance

Travel Insurance

Does you travel insurance cover what you need? Make sure you read the small print - especially if you're planning to do any unusual sports or activities during your time abroad. Contact your insurer if you'll be heading off the beaten track, and make sure your belongings and healthcare are both adequately covered.

If you still need to book holiday insurance, we can help. Find the policy you require on our website, or by contacting us.

Book Your Airport Travel

Don't leave it until the last minute to decide how you're going to get to the airport. If you're driving, plan your route in advance and pre-book airport parking for the best price.

If you're taking public transport, booking in advance will save you money and double-checking train and bus timetables will avoid transport hitches. Booking a taxi in advance will ensure that there's one available when you need it - and the cab firm may have useful advice on journey times, so take it.

Book Your Onward Travel

airport transportation

So you know how you're getting to the airport and you have your flight ticket - what about transport at the other end? At a minimum, check what the transport situation is; the last thing you want is to be waiting in a foreign city for a non-existent train or bus, especially late at night. Look up timetables for public transport and expected taxi fares before you go - and ask your hotel if there's a cheap and convenient shuttle bus or shared taxi system you can use.

Check Your Baggage Limits

Check baggage restrictions

Check your hold baggage weight restrictions before you pack, especially if you're flying with a budget airline - excess baggage charges are not a good way to start a holiday!

Check size limits on hand luggage as well: oversize bags may need to be checked, which may lead to an unexpected charge. Your booking information or the airline website should be able to guide you.

Get Ahead with Fast Track

Fast Track (sometimes called Priority Boarding) can be a godsend for families, passengers with reduced mobility and groups travelling together. If you think that hopping on board ahead of time would be a good idea, make sure you book Fast Track with your airline before you leave home.
