What baby products can I carry on board?
By Jonathan Vickery
Flying with your baby can be a worry, as knowing exactly what's best to pack is not always easy.
It's very important to only take on board precisely what you need. The less you carry, the less hassle you will experience passing through security.
It's very important to only take on board precisely what you need.
Below we have listed the most important items you will need while flying. All of these items should be permitted on the flight, but you will have to ensure that any liquids are in the specified 100ml containers. Arrangements can be made before your flight with your airline to carry containers of larger quantities.
Baby first aid kit
Making up a first aid kit for your baby is extremely important and can be taken with you onto the flight as part of your hand luggage. You will need to add the following items:
- Current prescriptions and medications (100ml liquid rules should be considered unless prior exemptions have been made)
- Details of your baby's medical history, immunisations, doctor's contact details, emergency contacts and insurance details
- Medicines such as Tylenol (infant) and Motrin. You should only give your baby ibuprofen if they are older than six months. Tylenol should not be added to milk or food when given to your baby and is only really suitable if your baby has a fever. As always, check with your doctor before giving your baby any medication
- Antiseptic wipes Antibiotic ointment
- A bottle of water or saline solution (this can be used for rinsing any injuries or wounds)
- Washcloth
- A small supply of plasters and bandages
- Hydrocortisone (provides relief from rashes and stings). Please note that Hydrocortisone no stronger than 1% should be used on the face
- Insect repellant (ensure this is suitable for your baby)
- Suntan lotion, sunblock and sunhat
- A first aid book with focus on babies
- An activity for your baby such as a small game or toy
Vital supplies
Although airlines may supply the following items upon request, it is important you carry them yourself:
- Current prescriptions and medications (100ml liquid rules should be considered unless prior exemptions have been made)
- Spare nappies
- Wet wipes
- Travel changing mat
- Spare dummies
- Spare bibs
- Feeding spoon
- Safety pins
Ensuring you are prepared before you travel will make your flight hassle-free. Everything we have listed above will be permitted on the flight as long as you are aware of the liquid restrictions. Please ensure you check with your airline if you wish to carry containers exceeding the 100ml capacity.
