Even if you've taken all the safety precautions, you can sometimes find yourself in a windsurfing accident or in trouble.
One trick too many or a sudden change in conditions can put even the most seasoned rider in trouble. Knowing what to do in these situations can help turn a major problem into a minor inconvenience.
Here's a few pointers to remember:
✔ Stay calm. Panicking can just lead to more trouble.
✔ Make an early judgement over the appropriate rescue method. If you or other windsurfers can get you safely back to shore then take that option. Otherwise call emergency services.
✔ Stay with your board, even if it means abandoning your rig and sails. It's the best buoyancy aid you could hope for.
✔ De-rig your sail and try to paddle the board to safety, if possible.
✔ If you can't get yourself back to shore, signal for help by waving your arms slowly.
Accidents and equipment breakages can be much more problematic if you're on your own. As you can see, the best methods of dealing with any issues are often to rely on others for assistance.
This is why we would say to NEVER go windsurfing alone. Even if your buddy can't directly help you, they'll at least be able to alert the coast rescue services who will be able to help.
