What to pack for windsurfing

Heading away on any holiday requires a lot of planning, and a windsurfing trip is certainly no exception.

We already supply a holiday checklist of things you'll need to take with you, but here's a few key items you'll need to take with you if windsurfing.

✔ If you're hiring equipment it's still best to pack your own wetsuit
✔ Your windsurfing gear including your board and sail
✔ Rash vest
✔ Beach wear
✔ Sunglasses
✔ Sun hat
✔ Camera (preferably waterproof)
✔ Sun cream
✔ First aid kit
✔ Bottled water

Leading windsurfer Guy Cribb advises: "Pack your bags well - I always use my harness and wetsuit for extra padding on the tail of the boards to prevent damage to these as it is very difficult to repair the tail. If the nose breaks, well that's out of the water most of the time so a quick repair would be sufficient."

Try not to bring too many bags. Double up where you can. Airlines are quite strict about their baggage allowances so try to keep the weight down where possible. Don't forget you won't be able to take the board's fins through in your hand luggage as they'll be classed as an offensive weapon and be repacked in the hold.

Try to use lightweight bags for your boards and sails. A heavy duty bag can really add to the weight of your luggage. If you do end up using a thinner board bag, don't forget to protect the ends of your board with bubble wrap or something similar. Baggage handlers at airports aren't renowned for being gentle, so the last thing you need is a damaged board when you arrive.

"Packing for a windsurfing holiday really is an exercise in keeping the weight of your bags down while also trying to fit in as much as you can."

Packing for a windsurfing holiday really is an exercise in keeping the weight of your bags down while also trying to fit in as much as you can. It's far easier to have fewer bags that are efficiently packed than lots of gear in separate cases. If you're intending on hiring your equipment then it's much easier as it becomes more like packing for any other beach holiday.
