One great restaurant, two great bars

If you start your holiday at the Copthorne Effingham, you'll be spoiled for choice when it comes to dining. The Terrace, a smart and impressive restaurant just off the main lobby, serves the three main meals, but the hotel's two bars also offer snacks and light meals. Whether you're looking to linger over a fine dinner or grab a quick bite to eat with a pint before bed, the Effingham has something for you.

Cambridge

Used the Cambridge Hotel at Gatwick twice for overnight pre-flight plus parking. Will do so again. Pleasant rooms, efficient and welcoming service, decent food at a reasonable price. All round good value.

Holiday Inn

Having to rebook our reservation was so quick and simple. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Gatwick. Staff very welcoming and efficient even upgraded our room. All was as described on the web site. Will always book this way.

A choice of bars and restaurants

Main meals are taken in the smart Terrace Restaurant. Guests don't normally take lunch, but it can be arranged, and you can eat with the many conference delegates who are usually staying at the hotel. When we were there we joined in with a buffet of salmon with warm mango salsa, mixed vegetables and minted potatoes.

An alternative is to have a bite in either of the bars, which have a good selection of snacks. How about a Cajun chicken burger for £12.50, a club sandwich for £10.50, or a mozzarella, pesto and tomato panini for £7.75?

Dinner

For dinner at the Terrace, we plumped for the warm salad of sautéed wild mushrooms, grilled red peppers and marinated artichokes with madeira and beetroot jelly for £5.50. It was well presented and flavoursome, and left us wanting just a little bit more … the duty of a good starter. For the main course we tried the grilled calf’s liver and bacon with creamy mashed potato, roast garlic and shallot puree, French beans and rosemary jus for £13.50. This was really rich and very tasty, with thick gravy delicately contrasting with the sweet shallot puree. An old favourite with a modern twist.

A warm and fruity glass of Veremonte Merlot Reserve from Chile - £5.75 for 175 ml - complemented a very satisfying meal.

The Terrace also has a great kids' menu, offering smaller portions and simpler options, such as fish fingers, chips and peas, with ice cream, fruit salad or a Cornetto for dessert.

Breakfast

There were plenty of good breakfasty things from which to choose the next morning: pastries, doughnuts, cereals, blueberry muffins and croissants for starters, sausages, bacon, scrambled eggs, and baked beans to fill you up. There was loads of fresh fruit too, plus toast and marmalade and tea and coffee ... we were well set up for the day.
