Champagne and vouchers were the delightful surprise in store for the 100,000th passenger to fly on the Stansted to Athens route.

Aegean Airlines gave Dr Helen Parkinson, from Cambridge, £50 to spend in the airport's duty free stores, and upgraded her and the colleague she was travelling with to business class for free.

The airline runs three daily flights from Stansted to the Greek capital, where onward connections to 16 Greek destinations, including many of the islands, are available. The route was launched last May.

The picture shows Dr Parkinson celebrating with Dan Bailey, from Aegean Airlines, and Paul Haynes from BAA Stansted.

If you missed out on being the 100,000th passenger but still want to treat yourself, why not book a room at the Warmans Barn House the night before your flight from Stansted?

Prices start from £69 for a room with eight days' parking at the hotel.
