A 35-minute bus journey up the coast takes you to Altea, a great spot for sailing. Alternatively, travel south to Alicante (the bus trip lasts about an hour), to take advantage of its extensive and well-equipped marina, which is an ideal place to charter a yacht. Both locations are good for windsurfing and kitesurfing enthusiasts, too, while it's usually very easy to organise some paddleboarding at most local beaches.

Benidorm itself has long been a haven for party animals that like nothing more than dancing the night away to the latest club tunes and house classics. KM Playa and KU are venues that are right by the sea, allowing fun to spill out onto the beaches at any time. To get you into the party mood, the aforementioned Platja de Llevant possesses a lengthy promenade that features a fine choice of lively bars.

Beach retreat

Fun and games are all well and good but what if you want to enjoy a bit of peace and quiet? Don't worry; there are plenty of options when it comes to seeking solitude. Xàbia is an 80-minute bus journey north and is well worth the trip. This small seaside resort town features a number of quiet beaches, as well as Montgó Natural Park, which is home to all manner of flora and fauna. Providing another alternative to sand is Calpe, which is roughly halfway between Benidorm and Xàbia. Here you'll find rocky, pebbly Cala Les Urques beach, which forms part of a secluded cove that is ripe for exploration – and handy for snorkelling, too.
