Deutsche Luft Hansa AG was established on January 6, 1926, funded by the German state and the world's first airline. Today the passenger airline segment (including Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, bmi and Germanwings) is one of five units making up the global aviation group's business. In 2011, Lufthansa carried 65.5 million passengers across 78 countries.

What makes Lufthansa special?

The German national carrier is the fourth-largest airline in the world in terms of overall passenger numbers and is continually innovating in customer service and aviation. Lufthansa is leading the world in simple, speedy passenger processes, such as multiple check-in options, self-service baggage drop-off and self-boarding. The airline has a comprehensive Customer Service Plan, and its aim is to make every flight a safe and pleasant experience for all passengers. 

Has Lufthansa won any other awards?

The airline is a regular at award ceremonies across the globe, most recently winning first prize in the environment category of British Airline Business magazine's Strategy Awards and Best Offline Airline in Australia, both in July 2012.

Lufthansa was named Best Transatlantic Airline at the World Airline Awards 2011 and received the Fast Travel Award 2011 from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) among many others.
