Getting to Newcastle airport by car

Whether your son or daughter is returning from travelling, or your partner is flying back from a business trip, agreeing to pick them up from the airport can make things much easier. To avoid being late wherever you start out from, organise your drive in advance using our directions:

• North – Follow the A1 onto the dual carriageway A696, which provides a direct road to Newcastle airport.
• South – If you’re approaching from a southern location like London, take the A1 north past Newcastle city centre, and connect with the A696 on your way to the airport.
• West – Take the A69 to the A1, and then join the A696. Follow the road directly to Newcastle airport.

Collecting arrivals from Newcastle airport

When you collect a passenger from the airport it’s unlikely you’ll want to wait around, so the airport has a number of special parking areas located close to the terminal. Choose from the options below to park in the area that suits your budget and time constraints:

• Short Stay – Located just outside the airport, the Short Stay Car Park is a good option if you have longer to wait for your passenger. You can park for a few hours at a competitive price, and can book a place in advance.
• Medium Stay – You can park in this area for free, for up to 15 minutes*. It’s just a short walk from the terminal building, giving you plenty of time to collect a friend and load up their luggage.
• Express Car Park – The most convenient option for quick pickups, you can stop without charge immediately outside the terminal to collect your passenger – just ensure that they’re ready and waiting for you*.

Leaving using public transport

Its close proximity to Newcastle city centre means that the airport has great public transport links, whether you live locally or need to travel a longer distance. You can book certain public transport services in advance or choose on the day, but planning ahead helps you to get the most cost-effective and convenient choice.

The following public transport options are available:

• Metro. Tyne and Wear Metro links 60 stations in the area, and is an inexpensive choice for local travel. It takes just 25 minutes to reach Newcastle Central Station, from which you can travel by train to locations around the UK.
• Bus. If you’d rather travel locally by bus, Newcastle airport is served by the X77, X78, X79, 353 and 74 buses, which visit Newcastle and a variety of other towns in the area.
• Taxi. The only company to pick up passengers from directly outside the terminal is Airport Taxis. The cars can seat four to seven passengers, and you can book in advance, or at an office in the arrivals terminal.
