Thirty years has passed since Air Berlin began the operation of flights from Berlin-Tegel Airport.

Now Germany's second largest airline, Air Berlin carries nearly 30 million passengers annually, offering a wide range of flight routes from London Stansted, including direct connections across Germany, onward links throughout Europe, and flights to an array of international destinations such as New York, Bangkok and the Maldives.

"Air Berlin pride themselves on offering low-fares with allocated seating, complimentary refreshments, child discounts and a generous 20kg luggage allowance which have always been extremely popular offerings to business and leisure passengers," said Nick Barton, commercial and development director for Stansted Airport.

"We're delighted to see the airline reach this landmark 30th anniversary today, which has seen them develop popular services at Stansted since 2002, and we'll continue to support their UK operations from here."

Titus Johnson, UK and Ireland country manager for Air Berlin, said: "Air Berlin started out 30 years ago with just one aircraft and the boundless optimism of founder Kim Lundgren. Since then the airline has gone from strength to strength, but in all that time has remained true to its pioneering spirit.

"Our extensive, modern fleet, superior customer service and low fares continue to position us as one of the world's most innovative airlines and we very much look forward to celebrating other landmark anniversaries in years to come."
