Cruise to beat Euro blues

With the falling value of the pound against the euro making holidays in Europe more expensive, taking a cruise can cut the cost of a holiday.

Online cruise holiday guide Cruise Critic has come up with some tips to help holidaymakers save money on their holidays this year.

Unlike a land based holiday in Europe, where costs can add up quickly if you’re paying in euros, opting for a cruise holiday can mean you can pay for most things in pounds.

Booking a cruise with a UK cruise line, such as P&O, Island Cruises and Thomson Cruises, means you pay in pounds rather than euros. Paying in pounds also avoids the currency surcharges many travel companies are now adding to the cost of a holiday.

With a UK cruise line on a European cruise you can also pay in pounds for everything on board, avoiding poor exchange rates and credit card surcharges. Not only this but you can pay for your shore excursions in pounds as well.

Another advantage of a cruise, says Cruise Critic, is that it enables you to visit many destinations during a single voyage without incurring the extra transportation costs in euros that are a feature of many land based holidays in the eurozone.

And for canny British cruise holiday lovers who really want to make big holiday savings, Cruise Critic recommends booking a holiday on a cruise ship from a UK port such as Southampton or Dover whose on board currency is the US dollar. This allows you to take advantage of the favourable exchange rate against the dollar.

Cruise ships departing from UK ports that use the dollar as their on board currency include Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Jade, Princess Cruises’ Grand Princess and Royal Caribbean’s Independence of the Seas.
