easyJet cuts fuel consumption

Low fares airline easyJet is aiming to cut fuel consumption and deliver significant cost savings with a new flight planning system.
easyJet will use the Lido Operations Centre (Lido OC) from Lufthansa Systems, a subsidiary of the German airline Lufthansa, to plan all its flight routings from October this year.
The new flight planning system is able to find the best route taking into account factors such as the flight time, weather conditions, fuel efficiency and costs. Traffic Flow Restrictions – complex regulations which ensure air traffic flows smoothly – are also calculated.
“The recent surges in oil prices are having a dramatic effect on European aviation and as a result easyJet are taking a range of measures to reduce our costs and improve fuel efficiency,” explains easyJet operations director, Cor Vrieswijk.
“We chose Lido OC and the TFR module because it will help us optimise the routes operated by our modern, economical fleet and create an efficient, dynamic flight planning processes, which will reduce costs,” adds Vrieswijk.
Lido OC also saves flight dispatchers time by automatically checking the regulations for each route, helping them work more efficiently.
The introduction of the new flight planning system is part of easyJet’s efficiency programme. This also includes fleet rationalisation, improvements to crewing efficiencies, and focusing on reducing overheads. Recently the low cost airline unveiled its new CFM engines which are said to reduce NOx and CO2 emissions as well as fuel consumption.
