Latest Mexico travel update

April 29, 2009

Some of the UK's largest tour operators have cancelled holidays to Mexico, in line with the latest Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advice.

Thomson, First Choice and Thomas Cook have cancelled outbound flights to Mexico now that the FCO is advising against all but essential travel to the country, due to the swine flu outbreak.

Holiday-makers due to fly with Thomson and First Choice up to and including May 8th 2009 to Cancun or Cozumel are being given the option to make a free amendment to their holiday or cancel and receive a full refund with no cancellation charge.

Customers due to travel between May 9th and May 22nd will be able to make a free amendment to their holiday.

Thomas Cook UK has cancelled holidays departing to Cancun up to and including May 5th and is offering a similar amendment service up to May 22nd.

Kuoni is suspending their holidays to Mexico up to and including May 3rd, with normal booking conditions applying from May 4th, unless the situation changes.

British Airways is continuing to fly to Mexico and normal booking conditions apply. Virgin, which does not operate direct services to Mexico, is offering passengers who have booked a through ticket/fare to Mexico up to and including May 5 the chance to rebook at a later date.

In response to the FCO's advice yesterday, ABTA's head of communications Casia Zajac, said: "Clearly, this is a very fluid situation and of concern to the travelling public. ABTA Members are monitoring and reviewing their policies constantly as the situation unfolds so that consumers who’ve booked packages to Mexico can be reassured that every effort is being made to ensure they are looked after and have options available to them."

British holiday-makers currently in Mexico are being taken care of by local representatives.

Keep up to date with the latest travel advice for Mexico on the FCO website or call 0845 850 2829.

From 10.00am today, for today only, Holiday Extras can cancel all airport parking and hotel bookings for customers due to fly to Mexico today and future dates (except future-dated BAA Supersaver).

The situation will be reviewed and updated tomorrow, Thursday April 30, 2009.
