Low cost airline launches new flights

Budget airline Flybe is starting 34 new flights to UK and European cities and holiday hotspots including flights from Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh airports.
New flights include Exeter airport to Brussels with fares from £29.99 one way including taxes and charges, and Exeter to Dubrovnik with one way fares from £69.99.
There are also two new year round routes from Jersey to Paris Charles de Gaulle airport, and from Dublin to Glasgow. As a result of a franchise agreement signed earlier this year, Flybe is also starting to operate two new Loganair routes from Dundee airport to Birmingham and Belfast.
“Our 34 new routes to and from the regions, as well as our agreement with Loganair, is confirmation that we are champions of affordable and convenient travel choices to exciting destinations across the UK and Europe,” says Flybe chief commercial officer, Mike Rutter.
Meanwhile Flybe has been attracting some negative publicity for its attempts to meet flight targets at Norwich airport and claim a £280,000 rebate. The budget airline needed 172 more passengers to reach a target of 15,000 on the Norwich to Dublin route.
Last Thursday Flybe issued a press release offering ‘Free flights to Dublin this weekend’, giving away 200 free return tickets. Flybe also placed an ad on a talent website, StarNow, recruiting ‘extras’ to fly to Dublin. Two extra flights on the Norwich to Dublin route were also planned.
Flybe’s actions have brought protests from environmental campaigners concerned about the extra flights causing unnecessary carbon emissions. There are also doubts about whether non-fare paying passengers will count towards the target of 15,000 passengers needed to claim the rebate.
