Heading away this bank holiday

May 22, 2009

Details released by ABTA (the Association of British Travel Agents) estimate that 1.8 million British holidaymakers are set to leave the country this bank holiday weekend.

With the public holiday coinciding with the beginning of schools' half-term break, ABTA is anticipating Spain and the Canary and Balearic islands to prove the most popular travel destinations during the period.

Justin Fleming, president of ABTA, said: "In spite of the recession passenger numbers this bank holiday weekend are very healthy, showing that the British love affair with foreign travel is as strong as ever."

Family travellers are set to take advantage of the lower weekly rates available in Florida during May, while the top five city break destinations are set to be the old favourites of Paris, Amsterdam, Dublin, Rome and New York.
